ChemNetz is an analogue and digital city map. The 60 locations depicted on it provide an insight into Chemnitz's alternative and subcultural scene. From community gardens and places for swapping and sharing to cultural centres and workshops, ChemNetz invites you to explore the city beyond the well-known sights.
ChemNetz is the first attempt to contribute to making cultural life more visible and at the same time encourage people to actively participate in it. After all, there are so many exciting places and projects that often remain hidden and which, for those responsible for the project, represent the city's greatest attractions.
Or to put it another way: ChemNetz is the quick-witted response to the not uncommon statement: ‘Nothing ever happens in Chemnitz.’
What makes the map special is its participatory approach: it was designed in collaboration with a seven-person advisory board and supplemented by surveys conducted in public spaces. The city map is continuously being developed and will be reissued every two years in analogue form. An accompanying programme, which will run from 2024 to 2025 and consist of various event formats, supports the map in making places and actors in Chemnitz visible. Critical city tours, cultural parades and workshops provide inspiration for curious minds to perceive the city in a new way.

For us, socio-culture is...
‘...not just municipal theatres, art museums and monuments. It is also a zest for action that takes effect in side streets and backyards, far away from major tourist attractions, and brings people together. It is the neighbourhood living room, the youth centre, the community workshop or the local model railway club.’
