Faiza was commissioned to develop this booklet to capture the key learnings from the first edition of the Techlab through interviews with consultants and participants. Faiza reflects on the parallels between the experiences of the Techlab participants and her own journey of developing her first commercial offering as an entrepreneur in the literary and publishing sectors.
I’m a freelance editor and former publisher and alongside two other friends from the publishing world, I’m the director of a small company called Silk Road Slippers which holds writing masterclasses in Marrakech and London. As I spoke to and compiled learnings from Techlab’s brilliant array of consultants and participants, I was struck by how familiar some of the problems, the gaps in understanding, were.
I believe my experience with the Techlab allowed me to disengage from my own literary aspirations and talk about these different forms of creative expression as possible outcomes of our masterclasses. It involved bringing myself down to earth a little bit and dismounting from my high horse of publishing industry expertise but ultimately, I realised we’d been doing ourselves a disservice by not looking at the power of self-expression as a whole. This will be the focus of our latest website messaging revamp.
