Alastair worked with the Techlab participants in Phase Two – Exploration. This phase lasted four months during which the cohort received support in areas such as sustainability, business model development, multi-platform programming and accessibility.

My background is in accessibility but rather than talking about standards, or cognitive and physical impairments, my discussion with the Techlab participants began with how you invite and welcome people to experience your product.

The biggest barrier to people who never use your product or service is the thought that it isn’t for them, or not realising that they can use your product, or even being able to perceive it. For example, museums may be accessible in a variety of ways, but a great deal of people still don’t come to them. How you talk about your product can be an invitation to the people who should know about it.

  • How do you start conversations about accessibility and technology?
  • How can the impact of accessibility be communicated best to funders and partners?
  • How do you turn the subject of accessibility from the theoretical to the practical?
  • How do you start to think about accessibility to meaningfully incorporate it into your work?
