As a free radio station, Radio CORAX strives to create a space where people from diverse backgrounds can meet on and off air and discuss social issues. However, many positions in society are underrepresented in the station's programming and association life. At the same time, the social climate is becoming more hostile, which is reflected not least in a peak in racist attacks. This makes it all the more urgent to create spaces for exchange, encounter and active solidarity. Radio CORAX wants to be such a place. But to achieve this, activists must make racism discussable and ask themselves what role it plays in everyday radio life.
With professional support, Radio CORAX has begun a structural process to take responsibility for anti-racist action throughout its broadcasting operations and association, rather than leaving it to racialised people. To this end, workshops were held for people with responsibility in the association, for white people, and empowerment programmes for people with a history of flight and migration and BIPoC.
It became clear that these processes are often painful and require a lot of time and perseverance. They require a willingness to listen, to recognise different circumstances, levels of knowledge and experiences of discrimination, and yet to strengthen cohesion. Above all, however, it is important to take those who experience racism on a daily basis seriously – and to act together.
